Chain | Cohn | Stiles ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s ‘Best Law Firms’

November 1, 2018 | 9:54 am

The Bakersfield-based personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm Chain | Cohn | Stiles has been selected for inclusion in the 2019 “Best Law Firms” list by U.S. News & World Report.

Law firms included in “Best Law Firms” list are recognized for “professional excellence with persistently impressive ratings from clients and peers,” according to U.S. News & World Report. Achieving a ranking “signals a unique combination of quality law practice and breadth of legal expertise.”

A law firm must have at least one attorney who has received high enough peer reviews to be recognized in the current “Best Lawyers in America” program, which is the oldest and among the most respected attorney ranking services in the world.

In fact, Chain | Cohn | Stiles has two attorneys selected as “Best Lawyers.” David K. Cohn, managing partner at the law firm, was selected into the personal injury litigation category of Best Lawyers in America, while James A. Yoro, senior partner at the firm, was selected into the workers’ compensation law listings. They join the top 5 percent of practicing attorneys in the United States in being selected.

“It’s an incredible honor to be selected as one of the best law firms in the nation,” said David Cohn, managing partner of Chain | Cohn | Stiles. “Our law firm takes pride in making sure we do everything we can to help our clients move forward after an accident or injury. To be selected as a standout law firm for doing this job every day is wonderful.”

The “Best Law Firms” rankings are based on a rigorous evaluation process that includes the collection of client and lawyer evaluations, peer review from leading attorneys in their field, and review of additional information provided by law firms as part of the formal submission process. Clients are asked to provide feedback on firm practice groups, addressing expertise, responsiveness, understanding of a business and its needs, cost-effectiveness, civility, and whether they would refer another client to the firm. Some clients chose to write comments about their experiences with the law firms. Law firms were asked to provide us with general demographic and background information on the law firm and attorneys and other data that speaks to the strengths of a law firm’s practice areas.

For this year’s rankings, over 16,000 lawyers provided more than 1.125 million law firm assessments, and almost 12,000 clients provided more than 107,000 evaluations.

“U.S. News has more than 30 years of experience evaluating complex institutions and their service to consumers,” said Tim Smart, executive editor at U.S. News, in a statement. The rankings were publicly announced on Nov. 1. “Law firms perform a vital role in American life, and ranking them is a key extension of our overall mission to help individuals and companies alike make important decisions.”

The “Best Law Firms” rankings can be seen in their entirety by visiting bestlawfirms.usnews.com.

The 2018 year has been an award-winning year for Chain | Cohn | Stiles. Besides “Best Lawyers” and “Best Law Firm” designations, other honors and awards received by the law firm this year include:

David Cohn, James Yoro of Chain | Cohn | Stiles selected to 2019 ‘Best Lawyers in America’ publication

August 15, 2018 | 10:17 am

Two veteran attorneys at Chain | Cohn | Stiles have been recognized in the 2019 Best Lawyers in America program, which is the oldest and among the most respected attorney ranking services in the world.

David K. Cohn, managing partner at the law firm, was selected once again into the personal injury litigation category, while James A. Yoro, senior partner at the firm, was selected into the workers’ compensation law listings. Both attorneys were selected into the 2018 program.

Attorneys named to the U.S. News & World Report’s “The Best Lawyers in America” are recognized by their peers in the legal industry for their professional excellence in specific practice areas. For the 2019 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, the 25th edition, more than 7.8 million votes were analyzed, which resulted in nearly 60,000 leading lawyers being included in the new edition. Lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, and inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor.

“Best Lawyers was founded in 1981 with the purpose of highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of those in the legal profession,” said Best Lawyers CEO Phil Greer. “After three decades, we are proud to continue to serve as the most reliable, unbiased source of legal referrals worldwide.”

David Cohn is one of the most respected lawyers in the Central Valley, having been voted into the “Best Lawyer” category of The Bakersfield Californian’s Readers Choice Poll year after year. He is a Martindale-Hubbell AV preeminent-rated trial attorney, has been named to the Southern California Super Lawyers list, and was selected to join the International Society of Barristers. Over the course of his career, which spans more than 40 years, Cohn has obtained numerous multi-million dollar results on behalf of his clients, and his cases have led to workplace, roadway and vehicle safety measures.

James Yoro is a Certified Workers’ Compensation Professional in California, and is one of the most veteran and most respected workers’ compensation lawyers in the San Joaquin Valley. He is the past president of the Kern County Bar Association. He has argued cases in front of the California Supreme Court, and for nearly 40 years has fought day in and day out for the rights of injured workers.

For more than 30 years, Best Lawyers has assisted those in need of legal services to identify the attorneys best qualified to represent them in distant jurisdictions or unfamiliar specialties. Recognition by Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer review. Its methodology is designed to capture, as accurately as possible, the consensus opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same geographical area and legal practice area.

Attorneys are nominated for consideration. They are divided by geographic region and practice areas, and are evaluated by their peers on the basis of professional expertise. Those who receive high peer reviews undergo an authentication process to make sure they are currently practicing and in good standing. Only then can top attorneys be included in Best Lawyers.

“Best Lawyers believes that the best lawyers know who the best lawyers are,” according to the program’s methodology. “Thus, our recognitions are based purely on the feedback we receive from lawyers already highlighted in our publication.”

Having two attorneys from the same firm selected into the “Best Lawyers” program qualifies Chain | Cohn | Stiles to be included in the program’s “Best Law Firms” listings. Best Law Firms honorees are announced in November.

Chain | Cohn | Stiles, attorney David Cohn selected among the ‘Best of Kern County’ for fifth year straight

May 3, 2017 | 9:27 am

For the fifth year straight, the people of Kern County have voted Chain | Cohn | Stiles as one of the best law firms in the area, and managing partner David K. Cohn as one of the best lawyers.

The law firm and Mr. Cohn were each selected as one of three finalists, named a “Favorite,” in the annual Bakersfield Californian Readers’ Choice Poll, also called the “Best of Bakersfield” or “Best of Kern County” poll. The contest for more than 20 years has had readers of The Bakersfield Californian and Bakersfield Life Magazine choose their favorite people, places, businesses and organizations in the Kern County area.

The poll this year featured more than 75 categories and received hundreds of thousands of votes, according to Bakersfield Life Magazine.

“Readers make their voices heard in selecting the people, places and organizations that exemplify excellence in Bakersfield,” according to the publication. “The competition is fierce and, at times, unforgiving but the honor of being dubbed ‘Best Of’ is well worth it.”

Winners were announced April 29 in the May 2017 issue of Bakersfield Life Magazine.

“Five years ago, when the ‘Best of Kern County’ poll featured the ‘Best Law Firm’ and ‘Best Lawyer’ categories for the first time, local residents gave myself and the law firm the biggest compliment by voting us as one of the ‘best’ in these categories,” said Chain | Cohn | Stiles personal injury lawyer David K. Cohn. “Five years later, and Kern County residents continue to endorse us. We are deeply humbled, and grateful for this honor and will continue to do all we can to help the people of Kern County during their times of need.”

Chain | Cohn | Stiles is the oldest personal injury law firm in Bakersfield, with attorneys and staff bred locally, giving them an extra edge that other firms would never have. In all, the staff and attorneys at the law firm care about their hometown, and hold those accountable to make sure local residents are treated properly.

As an example, take this testimonial from a confidential plaintiff who was sexually assaulted by a law enforcement officer. Chain | Cohn | Stiles represented her and her family in the case:

“They talked to me through everything and even helped me look for a therapist to help me deal with everything. They made sure I was well taken care of. We think of them like family now. They made the whole process 10 times easier than it could have gone.”

Added the plaintiff’s mother: “I felt like they wanted to help, and we felt safe and comfortable. Never did we feel pressure to do anything we didn’t want to do. I felt like they really felt the trauma we were going through. Our problems were their problems. As a mother, I was appreciative. We’ll always remember how they treated us. It was a tough time and they took care of us. They will always have a place in my heart. To me, they are family.”

For the past three years, Chain | Cohn | Stiles has been nominated (and ultimately voted as) “Best Law Firm” in Kern County. Additionally, attorney David K. Cohn has also been named “Best Lawyer” two of the last three years, and voted “Favorite Lawyer” (top three) one of the last three years.

Chain | Cohn | Stiles is listed under the “Best Law Firm” and David Cohn is listed under the “Best Lawyer” category.

Only the top nominations will make the ballot, and not everyone will make the ballot, according to The Bakersfield Californian. Voting begins in January.

  • Visit www.bestofkern.com and click the link to “start the nomination process”
  • On the next page, scroll down and click “Ballot” to begin

  • Each vote/nomination is automatically saved.
  • Please note that there is one entry per email address, and multiple entries from the same computer or IP address are limited.

Being nominated for three years in a row for “Best Law Firm” and “Best Lawyer” is a huge honor, said managing partner David Cohn. The two categories were added to the contest in 2013. And the recognition is not be possible without the people of Kern County, who Chain | Cohn | Stiles has been dedicated to serving for the last 81 years.

“Our passion is to bring justice and protect the rights of local residents who have been seriously injured due to the negligent, reckless or intentional conduct of another,” Cohn said. “We also strive to assist local residents in need with their workers’ compensation* cases. Once again, thank you for trusting us to stand for you.”

The final results are unveiled in the May issue of Bakersfield Life Magazine, which is included in the April 24 issue of The Bakersfield Californian newspaper.

Kern County votes Chain | Cohn | Stiles as ‘Best Law Firm’ for 2015 for third straight year; David Cohn as ‘Best Lawyer’

April 27, 2015 | 9:37 am

For the third year straight, the people of Bakersfield and Kern County voted Chain | Cohn | Stiles as the “Best Law Firm” through The Bakersfield Californian Readers’ Choice Poll for 2015.

Additionally, managing partner David K. Cohn was voted the 2015 “Best Lawyer” for the second year. He was voted “Best Lawyer” in Bakersfield in 2013 — the first year this category was introduced to the poll — and as a “Favorite” in the “Best Lawyer” category in 2014.

More than 20 years ago, The Bakersfield Californian unveiled a contest where readers would select the best that Bakersfield had to offer. They nominated, voted, and chose the best restaurants, shops, services and people in our community. The winners are announced each year in Bakersfield Life Magazine.

This year, Bakersfield Life Magazine wrote:

Chain | Cohn | Stiles has become a landmark in Kern County with a reputation of helping our own neighbors get through tough situations since 1934.

“The best part of our jobs is running into former clients around Bakersfield, who once came to us for help in their most vulnerable moments and thanking us for helping them with their cases,” said managing partner David K. Cohn.

Something that sets the law firm apart is all or most of its staff and attorneys either were born and raised in Bakersfield, or have called it home for years. As such, the care for local cases is important to the firm.

“The results of our cases have led to safer workplaces, better roadways and, in some cases, more accountability,” Cohn added.

This year, the contest featured about 100 categories. Readers from throughout Kern County first nominated their favorites in our community, and then voted out of the nominations in each category.

For the finalists, Bakersfield Life titled the categories in the following areas: Food & Drink, Shop, Go, Do, At Your Service, and Mind, Body and Spirit. Chain | Cohn | Stiles was listed under the “At Your Service” category.

The honor comes at a time of great change and milestones for the Bakersfield-based personal injury and workers’ compensation* law firm.

  • In 2014, the law firm celebrated its 80-year anniversary of serving the people of Kern County.
  • And this summer, Chain | Cohn | Stiles will be moving into a new building in the heart of downtown Bakersfield, at the southwest corner of Chester Avenue and 18th Street. Since 1934, the firm founded by Morris Chain has been situated at various buildings all within a 1 mile-radius in downtown Bakersfield.

Chain | Cohn | Stiles is the oldest personal injury law firm in Bakersfield, with attorneys and staff bred locally, giving them an extra edge that a firm outside of Kern County – or in Kern County for that matter – would never have. In all, the staff and attorneys at the law firm care about Kern County, and hold those accountable to make sure local residents are treated properly.

New Chain | Cohn | Stiles ad thanks Bakersfield, Kern County for voting us ‘the best’

June 12, 2014 | 8:48 am

The words are simple and sincere: “Thank you for making us Kern County’s best law firm. We stand for justice for you — the people of Kern County.”

This is the message that the Bakersfield-based personal injury law firm of Chain | Cohn | Stiles had for the entire Kern County community who voted the firm as “Best Law Firm” for 2014, and managing partner David K Cohn as a “favorite” lawyer.

The honors were unveiled in the May issue of Bakersfield Life Magazine, which is the “Best of Bakersfield” issue, where winners of The Bakersfield Californian’s Readers Choice Poll are announced each year. In that issue, CCS was chosen as the best law firm, and Cohn was chosen as one of the top three lawyers in Bakersfield. In fact, three lawyers at CCS — Cohn, Matt Clark and David Stiles — were nominated for the honor.

In the following June issue of Bakersfield Life Magazine, Chain | Cohn | Stiles wanted to thank those who voted for the law firm, and its lawyers, as the best in town. The law firm decided to feature a full-page ad in the June issue, thanking our Bakersfield community for choosing us. See the full ad HERE.

In the same issue of Bakersfield Life Magazine, CCS was featured in the Business Profile section for its 80-year anniversary. Included in the feature were various relevant questions and answer, such as:

How does Chain | Cohn | Stiles stand out from other firms today?

As the oldest personal injury law firm in Bakersfield, with our attorneys and staff bred locally, we have an extra edge that a firm outside of Kern County – or in Kern County for that matter – would never have. We care about Kern County, and we hold those accountable to make sure our residents are treated properly.

What firm accomplishments stand out from the last 80 years?

Our firm has more multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements than any other local law firm, and we’ve recovered more than half a billion dollars on behalf of our clients. We’re also very proud of the deep connection this firm has made with our community – the firm’s roots are embedded in giving back. Our attorneys sit on local boards, including Clinica Sierra Vista, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and CASA Kern County, among many others. And our employees give back in many ways, too, including hosting teams for March of Dimes and Relay for Life, sharing their expertise at the university level, and donating their time to volunteer for local causes.

David K. Cohn: The most interesting man in the world?

May 7, 2014 | 9:34 am

He may not be “the most interesting man in the world” who you’ve probably seen on the beer commercials, but Chain | Cohn | Stiles managing partner and Bakersfield personal injury attorney David K. Cohn is close.

Bakersfield Life Magazine recently featured Cohn in the monthly “12 Random Things You Didn’t Know About …” section of the monthly Bakersfield publication. The section typically highlights a well-known personality in Kern County, who shares facts that most people around our community may not know.

Part of reason Cohn was chosen for this feature is because he has been practicing law for nearly 40 years, and today he is one of the most highly regarded personal injury lawyers in Kern County.

He’s also a scuba diver, an avid University of Southern California football fan and university alumnus, and a Bakersfield native.

Additionally, the feature story was included in the May 2014 issue of Bakersfield, which happens to the “Best of Bakersfield” issue, where the results of a city-wide poll by The Bakersfield Californian newspaper of everything related to Bakersfield are revealed. In the issue, Chain | Cohn | Stiles was voted by Bakersfield as the “Best Law Firm” for the second year in a row, and Cohn was voted as a “favorite” in the “Best Lawyer” category, also the second time he was chose for this category.

“… It’s in his practice where Cohn truly shines,” Bakersfield Life Magazine wrote in the recent issue, which you can find on newsstands around Kern County now. “In this year’s Best of Bakersfield competition, his firm — Chain | Cohn | Stiles — was voted Best Law Firm and Cohn bears the title of ‘Super Lawyer’ in Southern California, an honor bestowed upon only the top 5 percent of lawyers in the region.”

Among the random facts that Cohn shared with Bakersfield were:

  • Some of my first jobs included making pizzas at Pizzaville, vacuuming cars at Oak Street Car Wash and sweeping out box cars for Santa Fe Railroad.
  • I’ve known David Stiles, my law partner at Chain | Cohn | Stiles, since grade school. We attended Roosevelt Elementary.
  • I once dove down to 210 feet in the South Pacific. I also dove in Malaysia, Borneo, Micronesia and Tahiti.
  • If I wasn’t a lawyer, I would have been a pilot.
  • I’ve practiced law for nearly 40 years and have fought well over 10,000 cases in my career.

To see the rest of the random facts, read the online version HERE, or the magazine version HERE. And to read more about Cohn and his practice, see his biography HERE.

We’re the best, again! Thank you Kern County!

April 26, 2014 | 7:28 am

Thank you Kern County! You’ve chosen us as the best once again!

This morning, Bakersfield Life Magazine and The Bakersfield Californian unveiled the “Best of Kern County” winners – and we’re on top once again!

Chain | Cohn | Stiles has been voted “Best Law Firm,” and David K. Cohn was chosen as a “favorite” in the “Best Lawyer” category. This is the second year in a row that we have been honored in these two categories. The “best law firm” and “best lawyer” categories were added to The Bakersfield Californian’s Readers’ Choice Poll two years ago, and we’ve been winner each year now.

The recognition would not be possible without all of you – the people of Kern County. Thank you for acknowledging the hard work our attorneys and staff put in every day. Thank you for voting us as your choice law firm and lawyer for 2014, and allowing us to serve Kern County for the last 80 years.

Our passion is to bring justice and protect the rights of local residents who have been seriously injured due to the negligent, reckless or intentional conduct of another. We also strive today to assist local residents in need of social security disability and workers’ compensation* cases.

The recognition and awards, simply, are icing on the cake.

So, once again, thank you for trusting us to stand for you. We’ve been named the best, and we will keep on working hard and fighting for you to continue to be the best.

Warm regards,

The staff and attorneys at Chain | Cohn | Stiles
